US: Favorable weather for western asparagus growers

Growers in California and Washington state are taking advantage of good weather leading up to this year's asparagus season. Adequate rain and warm conditions have been conducive to a good start to the season.

“There was rain in California and the Northwest this winter like we haven't seen in recent years,” said Dan Borer with Keystone Fruit Marketing. “The rain was particularly beneficial in Washington, because it came in March, just as we start to cut in the fields.” Warm conditions this spring have boosted plant production, so growers are anticipating good quality this season.

In addition to domestic supplies, there's also asparagus coming from Peru and Mexico, though Borer noted that asparagus production, to varying degrees, can be found in many regions throughout the country. While growing conditions have been good in western states, a late cold front has stymied production in other regions.

“Weather dictates everything, and that's what makes asparagus more of a volatile commodity,” said Borer. “So cold weather in eastern states slowed down production in areas that were starting up or just about to start up.”
