Record supply asparagus at BelOrta this week

Asparagus were briskly supplied to BelOrta due to the warm weather of last week. This week, BelOrta achieved a record supply of 375,000 kilograms of asparagus, the largest week supply ever. It even broke last year’s record (at the end of May). Today’s supply (136,000 kilograms) is also a market day record. “Our producers expect a large volume again next week. Production will slightly decrease after that, but they will remain sufficiently available for more than a month,” commercial manager Jo Lambrecht says. Last year throughout the entire season at least 2.2 million kilograms of white asparagus were traded through BelOrta. These are supplied both loose and in trays or bundles.

Sharp increase asparagus area
In the last five years BelOrta’s asparagus area increased significantly. Within the auction’s vegetable top 10, this delicacy is already taking sixth place in terms of turnover. This is high considering asparagus are only available for a limited period. Traditionally the season starts at St Valentine’s Day and lasts until 24 June, the Feast Day of Saint John. Lovers of asparagus have therefore got six weeks left to enjoy this delicacy.

Besides white in several sizes and packaging (loose / trays or bundles of 500 grammes), there is also a growing amount of green asparagus. Additionally, this year for the first time, BelOrta has peeled asparagus on offer, which is becoming more important at auction for BelOrta as well. Many customers, both catering industry and consumers, choose this convenience solution.
