US: Fuyu persimmon imports now available

There’s a medium supply of Fuyu persimmons coming from Chile, according to Robert Schueller of Melissa’s Produce in Los Angeles.

“They are of good quality,” said Schueller, adding that the fruit is available now through early June.

Typically known only as fall fruit, Melissa’s Produce has been importing Fuyu persimmons for nearly 14 years.

“Demand is coming from high end retailers and Asian consumer-oriented retailers as well, throughout all of the U.S.,” explained Schueller, adding that prices reflect the fact that the fruit is coming from abroad.

“Season started out a little high for a few weeks, and prices should drop for most of May where supplies are at best pricing. Pricing is comparable to that from previous seasons, though obviously higher than domestic.”
