Sino-Dutch Horticultural Cooperation

Building a solid platform to become a global player

“Many Chinese companies that come to Europe do this by acquiring a local company or setting up a joint venture. Although our group is well established in China, we have taken a different approach and started from zero in the Netherlands,” explains Shaoqing Wang of the Shouguang Vegetable Industry Holding Group Netherlands B.V.

In China, Shouguang Vegetable Industry Holding Group operates the entire vegetable production cluster and has a national reach: from seed breeding, greenhouse engineering, vegetable production, food processing to sales and distribution. To exchange knowledge and to learn from leading horticultural players in the Netherlands, the group established the Netherlands B.V. in 2012.

In the Netherlands, the group purchased a greenhouse and built its own office with research centre and hotel villa for overseas guests. “Our aim is straight forward: we want to establish a solid platform to facilitate cooperation between Europe and China,” Shaoqing Wang continues. “Our group is a major enterprise for the development of the vegetable production and supply chain in China, and our ambition is to become a global player. As part of this process we focus on improving yield stability, quality of the crops, food safety and spurring innovation. In order to achieve this, we cooperate with selected partners from the Netherlands simply because they excel in seed breeding, greenhouse engineering and management, as well as international marketing and sales. We have, for example, established a seed breeding joint venture with Axia Vegetable Seeds in China.”

The Ministry of Agriculture of China and the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation of the Netherlands reached an agreement in 2012 to develop joint activities to support the vegetable production and supply chain in China and Shandong Province in particular. Shouguang Vegetable Industry Holding Group has been playing an active role since the agreement in launching its activities.

To strengthen the knowledge exchange and to experience sharing, the group, for example, has designed a training program for professionals in the fields of seed breeding, greenhouse management, food safety, and retail - supply chain development. “We look forward to welcoming the first group of participants from China in May, and we are confident that they will have a great learning experience during their stay in the Netherlands,” says Shaoqing Wang.

“It is our plan to expand our greenhouse production, also in the Netherlands. Our group operates a large number of greenhouses across China. We also cater for Dutch partners and professionals to visit our sites in China and to exchange knowledge and experiences with our domestic teams,” Shaoqing Wang continues. “There are many developments and innovations that can be shared between the Netherlands and China. For example, online sales of fresh produce is more advanced in China than in the Netherlands. This is a business area where colleagues from the Netherlands can learn from our practices. We are ready to share and to contribute to the horticultural industry in both China and the Netherlands”
