Peru: Alliance to improve productive chain of organic bananas

As part of the 'Development of technical and management capacities for the integrated management of the banana production chain' VI component, specialists and technicians from SENASA will develop three lines of action: A Safety Program that implements and strengthens the Integrated Pest Management Pest - IPM; Integrated pest management with an emphasis on Trip insect control, which causes the banana's red spot, the development of the Field School (ECA in Spanish) and the release of biological control and organisms that cause diseases in insects.

"This strategic partnership between the Regional Government of Piura and SENASA is very important because it will strengthen the productive chain of banana, a source of substantial revenue for the country and especially for the region," said the executive director of SENASA Piura, Joseph Portugal Alvarez, when thanking the regional governor, Hilbck Reynaldo Guzman, for the trust he placed in the institution responsible for national agricultural health.

This public investment project is expected to improve the producers' associativity. Currently there are only 60 associations in the Piura region that bring together 8000 producers whose main objective is the export of precious fruit to the markets of Germany, Belgium, South Korea, the US, and the Netherlands.

The agreement will develop and strengthen the 'Improving the competitiveness of organic banana production chain to improve the exportable supply in the Piura Region' project that was formulated by the Regional Directorate of Agriculture, which will invest S/ 9'701,363.64 soles to benefit the banana producers from Morropon, Chulucanas, Batanes, Buenos Aires, La Matanza, Tambogrande, Yuscay, La Huaca, Pueblo Nuevo de Colan, and Sullana.
