Rivapak grow Australia's first commercial pink onions
Riverpak, based in Mannum, is the first Australian grower company to cultivate commercial volumes of Europe's gourmet pink onion; a hybrid of the brown and red onion. The variety is the result of more than three years of research and has a delicate taste, slightly milder than that of its parents.
Rivapak has tripled its production, compared to last year, with the largest crop of the pink onion hitting Coles shelves this week.
Rivapak general manager Greg Dawson said he was excited by the launch of his pink onions at Coles.
With a delicate taste and great attributes for cooking, the pink onion has become increasingly popular throughout the United States and Europe which has led to Rivapak introducing the new variety to Australia.
The onion is said to perform well in hot and cold dishes.
Rivapak is made up of three local family farms and has been supplying brown and red onions to Coles for ten years.
