Carrefour SA, reported stronger first-quarter revenue, boosted by growth in southern Europe and Latin America, and improving sales in China. Revenue reached €20.1bn. Quarterly growth was strongest in Latin America, where sales in Brazil rose 9.9% on a like-for-like basis, beating estimates, as all formats expanded in the country, Carrefour said. Spain and Italy, meanwhile, buoyed European sales, with both markets also exceeding estimates. French hypermarket sales fell 0.6% and China declined 8.4%. (Bloomberg)
AU: Meijer eyeing major expansion in Cleveland
Michigan-based superstore operator Meijer Inc. has eyes on expansion in greater Cleveland, CEO Hank Meijer said this week. "We see Cleveland as the next city to go to," Meijer said during an address at Western Michigan University's Food Marketing Conference Tuesday, according to an account on Mlive. Meijer told reporters afterward that the chain anticipated building eight to 10 stores in the Akron, Ohio, and Cleveland area over the next four to five years. Aldi, the German discount chain taking on the Australian market, has increased its dollar value market share to 12.1%, up from 11.6% about a year ago. Lidl’s Irish sales ‘significantly’ greater than €1bn
Lidl’s sales in Ireland are “significantly more” than €1bn, according to John Paul Scally, the company’s managing director. Lidl does not file accounts and has never previously detailed its revenues here. Mr Scally declined, however, to reveal the chain’s profitability.
