Spain: Soursop production gaining ground in Malaga

For the past year, the company Málaga Natural, specialised in the import of exotic fruits from around the world, has been shipping soursop to the province, where its popularity is on the rise. The fruit is imported from Colombia by plane, but it is now cultivated in many other countries. The experimental station La Mayora plans to conduct tests to find out how the crop adapts to the province. The soursop tree belongs to the Annonaceae family. It is grown in many tropical countries for its edible fruits, which are larger than the cherimoya, with sizes ranging between 14 and 40 centimetres long and between 10 and 20 centimetres wide and weighing up to four kilos. They have an oblique or curved shape, are covered with soft spines and its edible pulp is white.

The tree can reach a height of up to 10 metres. For some years now, it has been reported via social media that the fruit can be greatly beneficial to prevent cancer. And the fact is that demand for it is so great that Málaga Natural is unable to meet all orders, despite it being a rather expensive fruit, with a price that can exceed 40 Euro per kilo.
