A sustainable partnership with WWF: to reduce the carbon footprint

EDEKA headquarters turns off the light: ‘For a living planet’

“Lights off!” was the motto on 19 March at the EDEKA offices in Hamburg. The lights were turned off for an hour at 20.30 as a part of the global WWF climate action Earth Hour. With this action EDEKA emphasizes its goal to reduce its carbon footprint and to set an example of protecting the environment. The EDEKA subsidiary Netto Marken-Discount, with its 19 logistics centers nationwide, also participated in the WWF Earth Hour.

The slogan for WWF Earth Hour in Germany was “For a living planet,” this to draw attention to the decrease of biodiversity and climate change. The global action was held for the tenth time and EDEKA joined in for the fourth time. The Earth Hour will have a lasting effect, longer than 60 minutes and should motivate people the rest of the year to make environmentally friendly choices, and help to protect the environment.

EDEKA has been making these choices as a sustainable company and made sustainability a part of their corporate culture. Since 2012 EDEKA has been working with the WWF Germany as a strategic partner for sustainability in important areas. The aim is to reduce the carbon footprint of EDEKA, and expand the range of environmentally friendly products and more efficient ways of working with resources such as energy and water. And another key concern of EDEKA is to participate to limit global warming to two degrees.

EDEKA will continuously reduce their emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) with their climate protection program and change selected reference products or product groups.

According to the WWF Earth Hour 7000 cities in 172 countries participated in 2015. And of those 7000 cities 227 were in Germany. Landmarks such as the City Hall Hamburg, the Brandenburger Tor, the Colosseum in Rome or the Christ statue in Rio de Janeiro went dark during Earth Hour.
