Fresh cabbage is currently harvested in Florida and Texas, though there is storage product available from northern states. While storage supplies usually go to the processed market, production issues in Florida, brought on by inclement weather, has caused demand to pull on storage cabbage from northern areas.“There are buyers who will only use storage cabbage, buyers who will only use fresh cabbage and there are buyers who will use storage or fresh,” explained Eric Hansen with Hansen Farms in Stanley, New York. “So if there's less fresh product available it will affect us up here. I am getting more calls for stuff on the market.” Hansen only has storage cabbage available right now, and most of that is already spoken for by processors who use it for coleslaw. But cool, wet weather in Florida has kept the market tight, and that's bled over into the storage market.
“The stuff that goes to retail, that will always be out of southern states this time of year,” said Hansen. “But current demand is pulling some stuff out of storage.”
