Tomatillo imports from Northern Mexico steady

Supplies of tomatillos from Northern Mexico have come at a steady clip through the New Year. Prices have hovered near the mid-teens, and the market is expected to remain steady as long as growers don't have to deal with prolonged adverse weather.

“The quality of tomatillos coming from Nuevo Leon is very good,” said Esteban Corzo with Grande Produce in San Juan, Texas. “Supplies are also good.” Corzo said that for this past week he's seen prices around $14.50 per carton – that's a price-point he characterized as normal for this time of year. On January 15, prices for a carton of tomatillos from Mexico were between $15.00 and $17.95 at crossings through Texas.

“I don't think prices will change soon, but you really can't tell,” said Corzo. “With these items, it all depends on the weather. You can get some bad weather and the market will change quickly.”
