Firm onion market here to stay

The year 2016 is off to a good start for onion growers as demand is very strong. “It is a firm market with limited high-quality supplies this crop season,” says Ralph Schwartz with Potandon Produce. “I don’t expect this to be a short-term bump,” he adds. The 2015 growing season was characterized by a smaller size crop profile. As a result, large size onions are in really high demand at the moment.

Will $10 yellow onions go up further?
Prices have been climbing at a steady rate. “There is a supply shortage of red and white onions and the prices of yellow onions have picked up as well. Jumbo yellows are at $10 fob at the moment with room to grow. Normally, they are at $7-$10 fob this time of the year,” shared Schwartz.

No effect from Mexican crop expected
Throughout the winter season, the US ships storage onions. In a few weeks, Mexico will be ready to start shipping onions, followed by Texas in March and Arizona/California in May. “Typically, there is an overlap between storage onions and new crop. This year, the Mexican crop is not expected to have much of an effect on the price of US storage onions,” finished Schwartz.
