Mexico: Tomato prices remain high

According to the Secretary of Rural Development, Sustainability and Land Management, Rodrigo PiƱa Riestra, tomato prices at the supply centers will continue to increase until the end of this month.

The state official said that it was normal for prices to increase in December and January because production was lower; however, he assured, prices would decrease when the next harvests reach the market.

"The agricultural production cycles determine supply and demand. In this case, we are currently having a decrease in supply, but that should change in late January or early February," he said in an interview.

Rodrigo Riestra said that the average price for tomatoes at the local supply centers was about 30 pesos.
