Oversupply of tomatoes in Europe

“There are a lot of new players who don't yet understand the fragile balance of this business,” said Philippe Puech of Idyl. “At the moment, the market is heavy. This is mainly due to overproduction during the 'change of origin' period.”

“Prices are very cheap at the moment except for high-quality products where the price is not the only way to differentiate yourself from competitors,” said Philippe. “Spain is also the biggest competitor for us.” With lots of domestic product and foreign product available, prices have been low for this season, which started in October and is expected to run through the middle of May.

Idyl is part of the Puech Group, which has been involved in growing activities in Morocco for the past 40 years. The company has 250 hectares of tomato production in the country as well as partnerships with important Moroccan exporters to market tomatoes in Europe. Round tomatoes used to dominate product offerings, but now many more varieties, like cherry tomatoes and tomatoes on the vine, are available.
