Jo Lambrecht, BelOrta:

Cauliflower: more focus on convenience

Nowadays cabbage is all the rage. In particular, kale and broccoli are doing well. Is cauliflower also included in this 'cabbage hype'? "Cauliflower is definitely not doing bad," says Jo Lambrecht from BelOrta. "Consumers are still interested in the product. However, just as with all products, we have to continue focusing on the way it is presented. Because family dynamics are changing, we have to evaluate our product's quality and presentation. We are also focusing on making cauliflower more convenient, which includes taking a look at the packaging."

Good prices
BelOrta has year round conventional and organic cauliflower from different crops, "Currently there are still many outdoor-grown cauliflower crops. Production is doing well and the market is working with us. The weather conditions are perfect for high quality cauliflower. This is the season for cauliflower, and supply and demand are well balanced. Prices are good. Export is also doing well, with supply going to various European countries, such as the Netherlands, England and Germany."

BelOrta's organic assortment is slowly expanding, "In the organic sector cauliflower is a very important specialty for us. It is no longer a niche market. Last year, nine out of ten Belgian families bought organic products. This makes the organic sector a great opportunity for us."
