Trade adjusts to products from abroad

"Lettuce price level currently unsatisfactory"

The lettuce season in Germany is slowly drawing to a close. “The trade is bit by bit readjusting towards products from abroad, because the expiring season is drawing to a close at the end of October,” Hans-Jörg Friedrich of Pfalzmarkt für Obst und Gemüse eG. explains.

Although the lettuce from the Palatinate mostly comes from open land, the great drought of this summer did not have a large influence on the harvest, Friedrich further reports. “Because the cultivation area in the Palatinate can mostly be irrigated, the drought did not have any consequences. The intensive sun radiation has however led to deficiencies in quality, such as for example sunburn.”

Furthermore the speaker of Pfalzmarkt Eg explains that the cultivation areas for lettuce have behaved fairly consistently over the last years. “There are only shifts between species. The cultivation area for head lettuce is decreasing, but the so-called “coloured lettuces” are increasing in its stead. Currently head lettuce, oak-leaf lettuce, the lollo’s, Mini Romana and field lettuce are especially popular among consumers. Price wise, the expert still sees room for improvement, however; “With increased production costs in the background, one cannot describe the current situation as satisfactory. “
