Gearing up for broccoli, cauliflower and celery

Closing a successful leafy green season in Salinas Valley

Deardorff Family Farms has wrapped up another successful organic mixed lettuce, kale, and chard season with our partner grower up in the Salinas Valley and we continue our mixed lettuce and kale season down in Ventura County. Luke Patruno of our organic sales team comments - “Kale and chards were a complete success in Salinas. The quality was outstanding and gave customers a choice to load these items in either of our locations. For the mixed lettuce, we had excellent volume and quality through the entire season, and like kales and chards, gave some flexibility to customers for loading locations.”

The strong partnership between the Deardorff family and Bunn family – both fourth generation growers – allows us to offer consistent, high quality products to our customers year round. The combination of an ideal growing region and talented growers is a perfect complement to the high quality that we offer from Ventura County. Our commitment to customers remains true by having this partnership.

As stated by Tom Deardorff, II - “Our ability to have consistent supplies of high quality organics is based on our commitment to work with only the best farmers in the best locations. This separates us from the competition and shows the true value of our programs.”

In Salinas, we will now transition to our fall broccoli and cauliflower season, along with steady supply of celery through November. Tyler Clear of the organic sales team comments - “Looking forward, the Salinas organic celery deal looks to be finishing a few weeks earlier than the last two seasons. Because of this possible supply gap for some suppliers, retailers and distributors will lean heavier on Oxnard supplies that should start in mid-November for the holiday pull. Pricing is expected to remain strong until desert production beings in January.”

This week in Salinas will kick off the first harvest of our fall bunched broccoli. This is offered in 14 count packs with harvest continuing through mid-November. Cauliflower will follow in the next few days. We have added two new varieties to our lineup; in addition to white, we will be offering orange and purple cauliflower, a first for Deardorff and we expect the same high quality. Cauliflower will be in 12 and 16 count packs with supply through mid-November.

Our Ventura County season continues its year round push with current offerings of mixed lettuce, kales, cilantro, parsley, and spinach. We begin celery season mid-November with supplies available through next June, when we transition back to Salinas.
