Warm weather disrupted broccoli production in California earlier this summer. Combined with lighter homegrown production throughout the country, prices remained high. But now that supplies of broccoli have increased, prices have come down.“Light supplies were due to weather issues,” said Joe Kaslin of Bengard Ranch in Salinas, California. With light supplies from Mexico and production yet to transition to Arizona, those production issues in California affected market prices. Compounded with less competition from production across the country, the market was favorable to California growers.
“The market has been better than expected,” said Kaslin. “Prices were in the high teens for bunches and mid-20s on crowns during the last week to ten days.” But as supplies have increased, those prices have come down. On September 18, prices for a carton of bunched 14s from Salinas were between $14.50 and $17.55, and prices for a carton of loose crowns were between $20.50 and $25.55.
“I think these prices will stick around for a while,” said Kaslin, “now that the weather's nice and supplies have picked up.”
