“Within the next two to four weeks, our green bean production will peak,” says Kyle Vilhauer with Lakeside Organic Gardens. “Green beans are a popular summer item and we are moving through a lot of demand this time of the year.”
Steady price
Vilhauer is happy with this year’s crop quality and price. “We have nice long beans that shine in the box,” he said. Prices are holding up steady. The beans are packed in 25 lbs. cartons and those run in the mid-20s. “That is a good price for us and for the consumer,” adds Vilhauer. “With peak production coming up soon, prices may go down a bit for a week or two. After that, they will spike back up.”
Season ends with start of rain
Lakeside Organic Gardens will have green beans available until it starts to rain. The moisture from rain causes the beans to decay. “We lose our crop the first day it starts to rain, which is usually around harvest moon,” mentioned Vilhauer. All the company’s crops are grown organically and therefore, they can’t be sprayed to prevent mildew. Part of the green bean crop is grown under hoop houses to protect the vegetable variety from moist during wet and foggy mornings. Hoop houses also have a higher temperature, which green beans prefer.
In addition to green beans, Lakeside Organic Gardens’ assortment of summer vegetables includes zucchini, cucumbers, heirloom tomatoes, eggplants as well as green and red bell peppers.
