Chicory market traditionally calm

The summer months are traditionally calm times for the production and sales of chicory. Growers consciously choose to produce less in July and August. According to Hein Beudts it's very calm at the moment. "There is less supply right now, but that's a classic story. The production is at a lower level and this means there can be some shortages here and there. The prices are quite good at the moment."

Prices around 1.20
Buedts is specialised in the production of asparagus and chicory. Hein sees an important difference compared to last year, especially in the price. "Globally, everything is a lot more stable than last year. During the summer there was a short revival in July and the price on the clock reached a peak above 2 Euro, but after that it dropped again. At the moment the price is around 1.20. This is a fine price that everyone can work with. The producer as well as the trade and the retailer. If it rises much more, it will be difficult to sell."

Autumn
Hein expects the demand for chicory to pull up again from September due to various offers in the supermarket. "There will be more production then too. The new carrots season will start again in the spring and it is expected that there will be a gap between old and new harvest. We can't be sure when this will happen. It depends on a number of things," concludes Hein.
