US(NY): Dip in green bean volumes could strengthen prices

Though production of green beans peaks in several states this time of year, volumes out of New York could dip in the coming weeks. Adverse weather earlier this year disrupted planting and harvesting, which will affect volumes and prices.

“For us, volume is way down,” said Jason Turek of Turek Farms in New York State. “We probably missed a third to half of our plantings because of too much rain in the month of June, and I would say that's pretty typical to a lot of areas in the Northeast.” Peak production for many states in the region runs from about July through October, and the heavy rains this summer will impact volumes.

“We have beans to harvest this week, but then we're heading into a two-week skip that will occur because we couldn't plant in June,” explained Turek. As a result volumes will dip and prices will likely increase. On August 4, prices for a carton of green beans out of New York were between $12.00 and $14.00. Turek believes those prices could go north of $20.00 a carton in the coming weeks.

“Everyone is getting into some kind of weather skip that will shorten up supplies,” said Turek. “Typically, if we get those higher prices, we'd like better yields, but we're not getting those this season.”
