Basil is booming in Swiss kitchens

Considerably more basil, mint and coriander were sold last year than in previous years in Switzerland.

The sales of fresh kitchen herbs achieved a total turnover of 60.3 million Swiss francs in 2014 according to the Fruit and Vegetables Newsletter of the Marketing Department of the Ministry of agriculture (BLW). That is an increase of 5.2 million Swiss francs or 9% compared to the average of the previous three years. The increase was due to the sales of basil (+13%, 31.3 metric tons), mint (+51%, 15.9 metric tons) and coriander (+27%, 4.6 metric tons).

The total amount of sold fresh kitchen herbs decreased with 8% (80 metric tons) to 981 metric tons. This is due to the decreased sales of chives (-115.2 metric tons) and parsley (-14,6 metric tons). Bet because of the relatively low prices, the total turnover increased.
