Philippines: Del Monte Arabia to build $250-million plantation

Del Monte Arabia and the Palawan provincial government will soon sign an agreement to develop a $250-million banana and pineapple plantation, the governor said yesterday.

Palawan Governor Jose Chavez Alvarez told a press briefing in Makati City yesterday that the memorandum of understanding between the parties will be signed July 28.

The plantation will cover a total 6,000 hectares, and the produce will be exported to Asia, North Asia and the Middle East, Mr. Alvarez said.

The governor said Hector E. Rivera, general manager of Del Monte Fresh Produce (Philippines), Inc., has visited the lot.

“Palawan, having the same latitude as Davao, would be an ideal agricultural place for them to produce fresh pineapples and fresh bananas for export to North Asia and the Middle East,” Mr. Alvarez said.

As Del Monte Arabia is a foreign company that cannot acquire land in the Philippines, the governor said that Palawan would be “helping them it with the leases.”

Officials from Del Monte Philippines could not be reached for confirmation or comment.
