Organic sector firmly established their position in 2014

More than one million hectares of organic farmland in Germany

According to the current numbers the organic sector in Germany could further establish their position in the German agricultural and food production. “This is the right direction,” states the Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture Christian Schmidt.

“And we don’t stop but continue together to strengthen organic farming in Germany even more,” states the Minister and he continues: “Organic farming already contributes to our diet! Organic farming is an important part of the German agriculture and food industry.”

Federal Minister Schmidt launched the start of the future strategy for organic farming together with stakeholders and associations in May.

A clear growth is visible in enterprises that process and import organic products. An 11.48% increase compared to last year amounted to a total of 1020 companies. 2527 trading companies registered, an increase of 9.78 percent. And the number of processing companies increased with 3% compared to the previous year. In total 8477 enterprises were registered in this sector. 23398 organic farmers grew their products on 1,047,633 hectare in 2014. This information can be found in the annual reports of 2014 on organic farming of countries that reached the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture.

The share of organic farms amounted to 8.2% of the total farms and the share of the total organic agricultural surface was 6.3%.
The organic sector existed in 2014 of 35927 companies for producing, preparing and processing, importing and trading of organic products.
These are controlled by private-state approved and supervised by the countries inspection bodies ensuring they meet EU Organic Regulations and besides the regular inspections there are unannounced spot checks.
