Rony de Ceuster, Compra:

"Greenhouse vegetable market pitiful"

Due to the warm weather last week the production of many vegetables shot up. Since the end of last week there has been a decrease in the prices. According to Rony de Ceuster of Compra the market is pitiful for many vegetables at the moment. "A lot of prices are also collapsing due to the holiday period."

Decreasing line
"For courgettes prices between 3 to 6 cents were paid for the open ground products (08-07). The greenhouse courgettes were around 15 cents. Aubergines were under 50 cents that day and there has been a decreasing line since last week. The tomato price dropped further to 20 cents. Cucumbers held their ground at around 30 cents. The sales of cauliflower were difficult and finished at 24 cents."

Calm
He indicated that it's usually calmer in the holidays than it is in May and June. "The market was overheating last week. A lot of production and the sales during the previous weekend were calm. On the 8th the sales at the auction in Mechelen weren't finished until ten past eleven. This means that there was a lot of product and everything was sold slowly. Products are also being destroyed every day."

He indicated that the warm weather influences the production level of greenhouse vegetables. "You mainly see the production increase, but they can take the heat. With open ground vegetables, on the other hand, it influences the quality. I expect those consequences to be clear from next week. The damage may surface then."
