Rijk Zwaan- Global Gherkin Days

Professionals from gherkin world meet in Germany

Rijk Zwaan held the Global Gherkin Days on 6 and 7 July 2015. More than 200 participants from 22 different countries gathered in Germany to exchange knowledge and ideas about gherkins.

“The gherkin market is becoming increasingly international and marketing oriented,” says Gerald Krischke, Crop Coordinator. “At Rijk Zwaan, we’re keen to play a leading role in this and to help develop the market together with our partners. That’s why we organised this event, which included a crop walk in our demo field, machinery demonstrations and a seminar including presentations by breeding, cultivation, processing and marketing specialists.”

Long-term vision

Rijk Zwaan has developed a long-term vision for the gherkin market as the basis for a proactive approach to market developments like specialisation and mechanisation. “We’ve set up a worldwide network of crop specialists who are in continuous dialogue with the gherkin chain. This has led to a broad variety portfolio for all five major production systems, including innovations like parthenocarpic varieties for the US and low light-adapted varieties for protected cultivation.”

Valuable network

Thanks to the high level of attendance and the enthusiasm of the participants, the Global Gherkin Days produced some very interesting discussions about how collaboration can benefit the entire chain. “The gherkin industry is very people oriented. That’s why our global gherkin network is so valuable. By bringing together professionals from around the world, the event facilitated personal contact and stimulated the sharing of ideas about the future.”
