German retailers still have Spanish cucumbers

Doom and gloom on cucumber market

The cucumber market is not looking too good at the moment. After a rebound last week, prices are back down this week. Both the Belgian auctions and ZON recorded a price of 17 cents for the size 40 yesterday.

According to Kompany, the largest marketing organization for cucumbers in Europe, there is a large supply of cucumbers nationally, and abroad. "German supermarkets are still offering Spanish cucumbers and have not fully switched to the Dutch product. On average, the weather this year has not been good for cucumber consumption."

According to the marketing organization, the development of the cucumber market is very dependent upon the weather. "The high wire growers still have to clear everything out. The big question is how much longer Spain will continue. The situation could look very different in two weeks, but that remains to be seen."
