Italy: Fennel season starting at Caligari e Babbi

"We are starting the fennel season from the Romagna area with a 15-day delay. The produce is harvested locally and, although at the beginning it might show some weather damage, quality should be excellent in June," explains Marco Babbi, sales manager for Caligari & Babbi.

"2015 did not start well, but things have been improving from March onwards. Prices have been rather stable, there are no peaks, but there are also no drops."

Caligari & Babbi sends its produce to retailers and to the main markets. Exports are 30% of the turnover - Netherlands, Switzerland, France, UK, Ireland and Denmark are the main destinations. 300-400 gram packs are shipped to Ireland, Belgium and the Netherlands, whereas Germany favours bags with a single fennel.

"On 22nd May, we welcomed the shareholders from the Bejo seed company - we showed them our new processing line with the ozonisation system and the packaging options available."

"We schedule the production with the companies that supply us with the produce so we can process and sell fennel twelve months a year - in summer, produce comes from the Fucino area, in winter it comes from Apulia and in spring and autumn we have local fennel and that from Basilicata and Calabria."
