Fennel demand exceeding supply

The market for fennel has been active this year with supply holding steady. In the last two months, the demand for fennel has exceeded supply placing prices accordingly. “We expect demand and supply to remain consistent,” explains Diana McClean, director of marketing for Ocean Mist Farms.

Most sales on east and west coasts
At this time, Ocean Mist Farms is shipping fennel harvested from their Monterey County fields with the main competition coming from San Luis Obispo County. Most sales go to customers on the west and east coasts of the United States. “We offer a two-count clamshell and 12, 24 and 30 count cartons,” adds McClean.

Consumers favor the flavor
Fennel is one of the trendiest vegetables in the United States due to a growing awareness of its subtle but richly aromatic flavor. Cooks love fennel because of its ability to enhance and blend with other flavors. “Finding good labor supply and managing our water resources are the biggest challenges we face,” states McClean, “this is true for all our products.”

Packed fresh in field
Ocean Mist Farms are experts in growing Italian specialty vegetables with a reputation for having fennel with consistent, spherically shaped bulbs. Fennel is carefully packed directly in field for freshness on a custom-built harvest machine. “Over the last eight decades, our growers have developed cultural practices to isolate specific variations for optimum growth and sizing throughout the year,” declares McClean.
