Veg prices drop in Philippines

A drop in the prices of selected vegetables was observed at the Bankerohan Public Market based on the price monitoring conducted by Sun.Star Davao on Tuesday, May 5.

Decrease in the prices of selected vegetables went down by P5 to as much as P30.
Vendors said this is due to an increase in the supply in the market brought about by increase in production. (P1= $0.02 USD).

For instance, the price of cauliflower went down by P30, from P140 per kilogram last week to only P110 as of May 5. A P10 decrease was also noted for carrots, pechay, and squash. Carrots are now at P25 per kg from P35 per kg; pechay is at P60 from P70; and squash is at P25 from P35 per kg. A P5 drop in the price of ampalaya was also noted, which is now pegged at P45 per kg.

However, lettuce and potato increased by P5 per kg. Lettuce is now at P75 while potato is at P50.

The prices of other vegetables have remained stable: tomato, P22 per kg; broccoli, P100 per kg; string beans, P250 per kg; cabbage, P40 per kg; ginger, P140 per kg; garlic, P75 per kg; bellpepper, 125 per kg; red onion, P40 per kg; eggplant, 25 per kg.

Prices of malunggay and okra are at P5 per bundle.

Meanwhile, prices of selected fruits were also stable: watermelom, P25 per kg; lakatan banana, P30 per kg; latundan banana, P15 per kg; melon, P30 per kg; grapes- P230 per kg; durian, P150 per kg; mangosteen, P50 per kg; pomelo, P60 per kg; mango, P50 per kg; and papaya, P20 per kg. Fuji apple is P10 per piece and ponkan orange is P5 per piece.
