Decrease of TOVs in Canada
In Canada, this season will see less Tomatoes on the Vine grown domestically, as many growers have switched their crop to a different variety of tomato, or cucumbers. Therefore, the price of TOVs should remain steady for the next 4-6 weeks. “Due to a surplus in production, the price of tomatoes drastically declined last year,” explains David Ryall of BC Hot House Foods. “TOVs would’ve been down in the $5-$6 range, which is not a cost productive price.”
Leamington greenhouse capital of Canada
Approximately 50% or more of all greenhouse produce in Canada comes from the region of Leamington, Ontario. British Columbia and Alberta also grow greenhouse vegetables, and Québec has small operations which are not yet self-sufficient. Production in Mexican greenhouses is decreasing as their season comes to an end. “While the prices of produce imported from Mexico are generally lower than domestic prices, retailers are ready to pay more for Canadian grown crops,” adds Ryall.
Half of greenhouse produce exported to US
Canada exports roughly 40-50% of all greenhouse tomato production to the United States. While consumers are fans of bigger tomatoes, BC Hot House Foods is concentrating on smaller, more flavorful TOVS this season. “TOVs weight about 150-160 grams, but with bigger produce the taste is not as flavorful,” states Ryall, “Our TOVs are 85-95 grams and pack a big taste.”
