US (CA): Snap, snow peas come into volume

As production of green peas winds down in Santa Maria, volumes of snap peas and snow peas are increasing. Prices for the two latter varieties have been good.

“Production of green peas in Santa Maria takes place from the beginning of March to the end of April, and in Salinas they'll go for two to three months,” said Steve Hin of Tomahawk Produce. “It's a specialized market with a steady deal, so prices have been cruising in the $30 range.”

The market for snow and snap peas has done better, with prices helped by lower-than-expected volumes from Guatemala. Production of snow and snap peas will continue through the fall, and, so far, Hin has observed strong prices in the range of $15.00 to $20.00 per carton.

“Prices were good because Guatemala got out early,” said Hin. “They had a bad year, so the early exit got them good prices at the end but they didn't have a lot of volume to take advantage of that.”
