Royal Halo to source fair trade produce from Mexico
“We are certifying our pack houses in GlobalG.A.P. as well as Fair for Life, which is a fair trade certification,” said Hernandez. “We want to do this because we like to be involved with the communities we work with. We want them to become partners with us.” That means coming up with a payment scheme that is different from the one typically used by fresh produce companies in Mexico. That means different practices when sourcing their mangos, limes, grapefruit and avocados.
“We are helping communities by providing the necessary aid to get their crops in good shape,” said Hernandez. In the process, he believes they can provide the best fruit to their overseas customers.
“This scenario is what will give us an edge on each commodity,” explained Hernandez, noting that the fair trade arrangement is beneficial for everyone involved.
Royal Halo currently has about 200 hectares of land, and they have a pack house in Tapachula, Chiapas that handles Ataulfo and Tommy Atkins mangos, and they're in the process of building pack houses in Michoacan and Sinaloa to handle Hadden, Kent and Keitt mangos. With Hernandez's vast experience in the freight business, the company will also contract for goods like okra, peppers, spring onions, snow peas, melons, asparagus, baby aubergine, caviar citrus, physalis and goji berries. The entire business should be up and running by next year.
“We're in the most cost-effective area, logistics-wise, in Mexico, and we want to cause the most social impact,” said Hernandez. “I've dedicated my life to help fellow Mexican growers and deliver Mexican produce to the entire world in a proud and responsible way.”
