Canada: Locally grown fresh herbs in demand
In the last year Heritage Line Herbs has not increased their price, even in the midst of an increasing demand, as they prefer to offer customers affordable herbs. “We grow all our herbs organically in Ontario without the use of pesticides,” states Benner, “but we’re not going to pursue certification again this year because it would cause a drastic increase in cost to our customers.”
Export is available throughout Canada; however, the customer is responsible for paying shipping costs, as Heritage Line Herbs ships their entire catalogue of products themselves. “A lot of our customers order directly from our website. We’ve exported as far as British Columbia and Nova Scotia.”
Recently, Heritage Line Herbs moved to a new farm and now grows two to three acres. This year they are introducing a new field to grow herbs such as basil, thyme, and oregano used in their dried herbs and blends. “Depending on if the herbs are perennial or annual we need to refresh our plots and herbs yearly,” adds Benner.
Weather is the only major threat to the growing operation as pests generally do not interfere with herbs. “We plant rows of catnip between the herbs in order to attract the aphids,” states Benner, “The odd time when we are short in a certain herb we do have a company we can contact.”
Although cooking with dry herbs is familiar throughout all age groups, fresh culinary herbs hold their popularity in an unusual demographic. “Our fresh herbs are popular among young people, particularly young men.”
