Italy: Sicilian aubergines replace Spanish on domestic market

The situation described a few weeks ago, when Spanish aubergines and the lack of domestic produce were creating problems on the market, no longer applies as Sicily is now in full production. "The season started in early April, maybe one week later than usual, and the produce looks good, has a high quality and is sold at accessible prices," explains Renzo Mainetti, owner of wholesaler Novafrut. The Sicilian produce has replaced that from Spain. "There are still some quantities arriving from Spain, but imports have now become marginal."

Demand is good, as is supply. "So far, the season is in line with 2014. Loose aubergines are sold at €1-1.10/kg, whereas crates vary between €1.30 and €1.40/kg, 20 cents less than last year."

Production increased gradually over the week "and it is quantities that determine prices, so last week prices were 10-15 cents higher than this week."

"The market is currently stable and should remain so until the end of the month. Then the time will come for the second production. If it is not ready on time, there will be a gap in supplies, but at the moment no delays have been reported. Weather permitting, the season should bear no surprises."
