Rhubarb harvest has started

In the German Rhineland, the rhubarb harvest has started again, the 'Provinzialverband Rheinischer Obst- und Gemüsebauer' in Bonn notes. By using a film cover, the growers were able to bring forward the harvest two to three weeks, German website Gabot.de reports. Rhubarb is one of the first vegetables to be harvested from the open field in spring.

The Rhineland is one of the main cultivation regions for rhubarb in Germany. In the region, the vegetables are grown on about 300 hectares. The fresh rhubarb is harvested until June 24. After that date, the rhubarb plants need to recover and store up reserve substances, in order to be able to sprout properly again next spring. Consumers who still haven't had enough of the vegetable by then, can also freeze rhubarb for later consumption.
