Availability limited to April

US: Jumbo hothouse beef tomatoes in stores

“At the beginning of the greenhouse tomato harvest, fruit sizes are often very large,” says Jon Steffy with Four Seasons Produce, Inc. Given that greenhouse production of beef tomatoes has just started, the superlarge size is offered right now. “Usually, availability of the jumbo size is limited to April,” added Steffy. Once greenhouses come into full production, fruit sizes tend to fall within more normal ranges for the rest of the growing season. Four Seasons sources its jumbo beef tomatoes from greenhouse growers in Canada (Ontario) and the Eastern part of the United States.

Four Seasons Produce is a wholesaler who services independent retailers. According to Steffy, jumbo hothouse tomatoes are very popular with Four Seasons’ customers. “They create a unique opportunity for retailers to change up their specs and offer a seasonal product with the Wow-factor.” Jumbo beef tomatoes are considered a prime product and are great for slicing. “To give you an idea of their size, one slice almost covers a whole sandwich,” finished Steffy.
