Nordrhein-Westfalen: open ground vegetable area increased by 3.5 percent

In the German state Nordrhein-Westfalen vegetables were grown in the open ground on 22,155 hectares in 2014, reports the German website Proplanta.de. This made the cultivation area 3.5 percent larger than in 2013. In total 658,287 vegetables were harvested from the open ground in the state. This is 13.7 percent more than in 2013. Over a quarter of the total harvest amount consisted of carrots (25.5 percent).

As far are cultivation surface is concerned, the asparagus still dominates in Nordrhein-Westfalen. The asparagus area was 3,431 hectares in 2014. This means the area has grown 5.8 percent compared to the previous year. The share of this vegetable in the total open ground vegetable area was at 15.5 percent the year before.
