US(GA): Vidalia sweet carrots available now

“The same sandy soils that work so well for Vidalia onions, also produce a sweet, full-flavored carrot”, says Matt Curry with Curry & Company. It is a seasonal carrot that is available for about four months a year. Harvest starts in March and Vidalia carrots are available until June. “We had a slow start to the month because of wet weather. Muddy fields made it difficult to harvest, but as we get further into the month, the volumes keep ramping up. By April, we will be harvesting at full speed”, Curry added.

Curry & Company has the exclusive rights to sell carrots under the Vidalia label. The difference between traditional carrots and Vidalia carrots is the sweetness. “We use varieties that are often used for baby carrots, but we allow them to grow larger”, Curry said. They also tend to be longer and thinner, which results in a full-size snacking carrot. Vidalia carrots are also very suitable as an ingredient in salads and juices.

The Vidalia growing region is a borough of the State of Georgia. Winter months can be very wet, sometimes resulting in a challenge during harvest season. Curry & Company grows about 400 acres of Vidalia carrots. The product is sold to grocery stores across the United States and comes in 1 lb., 2 lb., 3lb. and 5lb. packages. To foodservice, Curry & Company sells in 25 lb. and 50 lb. bags.
