More open field vegetables grown in Schleswig-Holstein

In the German state of Schleswig-Holstein, vegetables were grown in the open field on 5,904 hectares in 2014, German website Proplanta.de reports. This means the acreage increased by about seven percent compared to the previous year. All in all, the harvest volume amounted to 335,000 tonnes, figures from the state's Statistics Bureau show.

The vegetable varieties grown most often were head cabbage, carrots and asparagus. 53 percent of the open field acreage (3,128 hectare) was used for the cultivation of the three varieties of head cabbage: white cabbage, red cabbage and kale. Asparagus was grown on 508 hectares, and carrots on 871 hectares.
