Joint banana venture for Mozambique, S.Africa

A firm in Guija in Mozambique’s southern Gaza province has exported 3,000 tonnes of bananas to the South African market, according to state radio on Tuesday.Radio Mozambique said the fruit has earned up to US$1 million for the African Food Company based in Chongoene.

The station said the joint venture production unit, launched in 2013, started with an investment of US$8 million and is currently working in an area of more than 300 hectares.

The organisation has a total of 500 hectares available to it and employs more than 400 people, most of them women.

According to the station, the recent banana consignment from Guija to South Africa represented about half of what was the total harvest of the venture last year.

Project manager Amshly Cameron said the African Food Company was severely affected by floods, which hit the production areas and caused a loss of about 80 hectares of plantations.
