Brandenburg: more vegetables grown again in 2014

In the German state of Brandenburg, the open field vegetable acreage increased by nearly 13% in 2014 compared to the previous year. That makes it the first year since 2010 that more vegetables were grown than in the previous year, German website Gabot.de reports.

The expansion of the vegetable acreage is, according to information from the Statistical Office for Berlin-Brandenburg, mostly thanks to the increased asparagus production. The asparagus acreage increased by 22% compared to 2013. Asparagus was grown on 4,237 hectares, of which 2,852 hectares could be harvested. The harvest yielded 5,990 kg per hectare, the best hectare yield since 1991.

Brandenburg is also known for its cucumber and gherkin production. Cucumbers and gherkins were grown on 620 hectares. Gherkins, the second most important vegetable variety in Brandenburg, could be picked from 559 hectares. For this fruit vegetable, a very good harvest was achieved, with 70,710 kg per hectare.
