German asparagus acreage + 5%

In 2014, the asparagus acreage in Germany increased by 5% compared to 2013, to about 25,300 hectares. That means asparagus took up the largest cultivation area of all vegetable varieties, with a share of 22% in the total open field acreage.

The German Statistics Office (Destatis) further reports that the harvest amount for asparagus was 11% bigger than in 2013, with over 114,000 tonnes. More than half of the German asparagus acreages was in the three states of Lower Saxony (5,400 hectares), Brandenburg (4,200 hectares) and North Rhine-Westphalia (4,100 hectares).
