New SANDO clementine hits the market

After a long process of varietal selection through traditional methods, which has lasted for over fifteen years, Alcanar Verd Cítrics i Vivers SL chose Fruit Logistica, in Berlin, for the presentation of its new late clementine variety, SANDO, which is the result from a natural spontaneous mutation of the Fina clementine, from Castellon de la Plana, which is considered the "mother of all clementines".

"Its smooth taste resembles that of an early clementine; it offers the perfect blend of sweetness and acidity, with a pervasive and lasting feeling of freshness on the palate," explains Miguel Matamoros, owner and manager of Alcanar Verd Cítrics i Vivers.

"We noticed a great interest from visitors to taste the SANDO, partly due to its intense and striking orange colour," continues Matamoros. "This intense colour, which the fruit reaches while still on the tree, makes it possible to store it without the need for ethylene gas to accelerate its ripening."

Furthermore, Miguel Matamoros stresses that it's easy to peel, but also highly resistant to water, which prevents problems caused by excess moisture; an issue that has taken a great toll on the clementine campaign until January.

The Mediterranean climate where the variety grows gives it a freshness that can be enjoyed from January up until mid-March. It is thus considered a second season or late clementine. The calibres available are 1, 2 and 3.

The SANDO clementine is a protected plant variety and is managed through an integrated project.

The company Alcanar Verd Cítrics i Vivers S.L. is based in the city of Alcanar, Tarragona. Production areas are mostly located between northern Castellon and southern Tarragona, where most of the Iberian Peninsula's cultivation and supply of certified citrus seedlings takes place.
