Bulls Blood Olympia maintains colour in high temperatures

Bulls Blood Olympia, a popular new item offered by UK based CN Seeds, was commercially launched at this year's Fruit Logisitica in Berlin. This new Bulls Blood Olympia red beet leaf gives the market a variety which grows during the summer in higher temperatures and maintains a good colour. With other red beet leaves, as the temperature rises, the leaf turns bronze so the decision to introduce the Bulls Blood Olympia was made to offer a variety that maintains its dark red colour.

The product is primarily meant to be used in salad mixes to give a lift of a dark red in addition to the green. It was common in past salad mixes to use radicchio which is slightly bitter and doesn't appeal to all consumers. This is a selling point for the Bulls Blood Olympia because it is a pleasant leaf with a subtle flavour and is more suited to fit all tastes.

Charlie Seddon, in charge of Business development at CN Seeds says that the company has received a positive response from retailers about the new product.

The new red beet leaf was so popular, in fact, that there were not enough seeds to supply the demand. The company believes they have found the balance and now have enough seeds to supply the market. Edible ornamentals are currently a trend and CN Seeds discovered a surprising crossover effect, with many gardeners liking Bulls Blood from an ornamental perspective.

Bulls Blood Olympia is a summer product for Northern Europe. For Mediterranean countries such as Spain, standard bulls blood is still grown in the winter, and Bulls Blood Olympia is more suited for the spring.

The leaf can be grown in the open ground or protected. Too much rain can cause damage, so some growers choose to cover the leaves as an insurance policy, but this isn't necessary.
