Europe’s largest organic food hall to open in Rungis, France

The Rungis fresh produce wholesale market has started to construct a building for 100% organic products. It will be Europe’s largest hall devoted to such products. Consumers will notice a difference as of next Autumn when there will not only be fruit and vegetables on offer, but also “deli” products.

To begin, 15 or so wholesalers are expected in the new 6,000 m2 building.

Organic produce sales are up all over the sector, however according to Agence Bio’s barometer, wine sales have the largest growth rate (+56% between 2010-2013). According to the same source, the amount of French people consuming organic produce has never been so high. Over one in four people in France consume organic produce per week, and 9% every day. In 2013, 82% of sales were in large food stores and specialised shops. The highest growth rate is for direct sales, +17%, partly thanks to the internet.

With the new organic hall opening at Rungis one can expect to find many more organic products on the market. It is already a very competitive sector with a 15% growth last year.
