Henk van Doorne:

"Lacklustre lettuce sales despite spread out supplies"

At the moment, the lettuce trade in Europe is a bit lacklustre, says exporter Henk van Doorne from 's-Gravenzande. "The regular customers are not really appearing. Fortunately there's a lettuce shortage in the United Kingdom, so I have a bit of a back door there, but on the whole it's very lacklustre. Right now, not much is going to far away destinations either, like Dubai and Qatar."

Supply isn't to blame for the weak market, according to the exporter. "Supplies aren't extremely big, and are rather spread out. In the near future, I'm not expecting any large volumes. The numbers will start to increase a bit come February." Henk says the price is acceptable. "The jumbo lettuce in particular pays reasonably well with a price between 55 and 75 cents, and the price of smaller, wrapped lettuce is around 35 cents."

A small problem is that the garden centipede is causing damage to lettuce at various nurseries, therefore the head doesn't always reach the desired weight.
