Mexico: Tamaulipas to harvest over 1 million tons of veg

Tamaulipas producers estimate that, at the end of the harvest period, the vegetable production of the spring-summer 2014 cycle will amount to 1,115,000 tons.

The head of the Ministry of Rural Development, Carlos Ernesto Solis Gomez, said that they had harvested 117,000 hectares to date and that there still were 208,000 hectares remaining.

The main production, he added, would focus on the central and southern part of the state, so there would be a large variety of forage sorghum and grain sorghum, green chilli, soy and beans, among others.

He said they had planned to plant over 423,000 hectares of vegetable crops and produce 1,115,000 tons but they had only reached 85 percent of the program.

However, the officer said this agricultural season had been very good, because the excellent moisture increased the harvest expectations.

He also stated that Tamaulipas had 1.5 million hectares devoted to agriculture, 500,762 of which correspond to irrigated agriculture.
