For the first time in the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern the area of organic farming has fallen, reports the German website Fruchthandel.de. On August 31, 2014 organic farming land was 5,000 hectares less than it was last year at the same time. In 2012 there was talk of increasing the total organic farming land to 2,500 hectares and in 2013 there was an increase of 250 hectares.
In the North-eastern German state now there is 119,600 hectares of organic farming land. According to Till Backhaus, the Minister of Agriculture for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, on the one hand, the low growers prices are responsible for the decrease, and on the other hand, the revision of the organic farming regulation in the EU has effected this. This has led to a significant amount of uncertainty within the community of growers.
