Schleswig-Holstein: potato harvest +10%

In the German state of Schleswig-Holstein, ten percent more potatoes were harvested in 2014 than last year, German website Proplanta.de reports. This is thanks to "extraordinarily good growing conditions during the entire vegetation period", the Schleswig-Holstein Agricultural Board announced last Thursday.

All in all, 228,000 tonnes of consumption potatoes, cultivated on an acreage of 5,700 hectares, were harvested in the state. Despite the good quality of this year's harvest, the Agricultural Board does voice concerns on dumping prices, seeing how consumption of fresh potatoes has gone down by nearly ten percent in the past year. Around 80 percent of the harvest is sold directly by farmers or through food retail in Schleswig-Holstein.
